The Emotional Shake Up Pop Music Needs: fajjr+ali Release Latest Single, "I'm Fine"

NEW YORK, Dec. 3, 2021 The world of social media is inundated with overly happy, always perfect, rich and ritzy influencers who never seem to face the obstacles that the average person experiences quite often. Even through the last nearly two years of a pandemic, influencer, and wannabe influencer lives seemingly remained unphased by everyone else's world crumbling around them. The parallels to the boppy world of pop music left artist duo, fajjr+ali, with feelings of sadness and hints of jealousy trickling in. Wondering why they just couldn't "be happy" like everyone else seemed to be, and questioning why they never wrote the stereotypical "cheerful" pop music, they reevaluated their thoughts and in speaking with each other and others they learned that they were not alone in these feelings.

Their latest single, "I'm Fine" pays homage to their dramatic theatrical backgrounds with deep lyrics defying the unwritten rules of what pop music is supposed to be. Ali, the musical composer of the two, began playing the happiest, "poppiest" chords on the piano sounding almost too saccharine and emulating a similar "fake happiness" to the influencers they had been seeing on social media.

"I'm Fine'' is a song about being the exact opposite. We struggle so much with the effects social media has on us and the way that it amplifies our insecurities. We hope it makes us all dig deeper into the toll that acting like everything is perfect can have on our mental health.

Realizing they had created the perfect melody to represent what they were feeling, the song became this dichotomy of these happy moments and dark moments with a story told from the point of view of someone, an influencer, who overcompensates on social media. The song took roughly one year to finalize, with the final verse being a wild unraveling of the feelings that the pandemic and social media brought on for the duo, almost mimicking that of an emotional breakdown towards the end of the song. While the song is written from the perspective of a social media influencer and not the first-person perspective of Fajjr or Ali, the duo was certainly left to do some self-reflection post-recording.

The song "I'm Fine" is the duo's first single release as part of an EP that covers different types of insecurities and overcompensating that so many people attempt to hide. The artists hope that in sharing their own personal struggles, it will not only broaden the landscape of the pop music industry's typical sound but that it will also encourage others to be kinder to themselves and be more open about their experiences rather than pretending that all is fine and feeling the pressure to live up to unrealistic expectations.
